Atlas Observatory

A living atlas of the night sky, reimagined as a public instrument.

Overview

We rebuilt the Atlas Foundation's digital presence around a single idea: the observatory is a machine for wonder. Every surface — from the homepage to a printed field guide — inherits from one motion grammar and a typographic system tuned for long-form science writing.

01 · Context

A century-old institution meeting a new audience.

Atlas needed to translate rigorous astronomy into a language that could travel — press, patrons, curious teenagers on their phones at midnight. The old site read like an archive. The new one had to feel like a live signal.
Propulse understood the science before they touched a pixel. That is rarer than it should be.
— Dr. Yui Halberg, Director

03 · System

One grid, three temperatures.

A single 12-column grid drives every layout, but the palette shifts by section: cold blues for the sky log, warm ochres for the field notes, deep neutrals for governance. The motion system holds it all together.

04 · Outcome

A platform that earned its silence.

Session times tripled. The foundation now ships weekly editorial without touching an engineer. And the observatory itself became something you could feel through a browser — patient, precise, alive.
